Rukia Dahir, Principal and Managing Director of RSD Strategies, recently completed the Asbestos Supervisor training course offered by Global Environmental Solutions (GES). The new certificate will make RSD Strategies better able assist clients when planning projects involving asbestos. The week-long course offered intensive hands-on and theoretical training for compliance with EPA, OSHA, Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia regulations.
Temple Hills, Maryland, March 24, 2015 – Rukia Dahir of RSD Strategies completed the Asbestos Supervisor training course, earning a certificate from GES as well as from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Registration (DPOR). She also passed Maryland Department of Environment’s licensure test for Asbestos Supervisors. These new qualifications adds to the licenses and certifications already held by the company, which is an expert in environmental consulting and project management.
Asbestos is a group of silicate materials that were commonly used in construction because of their heat and electrical insulation and sound-proofing properties. Because of their known health risks, including lung cancer and a lung disease known as asbestosis, asbestos abatement is required for projects involving exposure of previously used asbestos. Such projects can proceed only under the supervision of a qualified supervisor.
According to the GES course description, Dahir is now equipped to “serve as the competent person on an asbestos abatement project” in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The 5-day training course addressed EPA regulations and the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986, which protects against asbestos exposure in schools. Topics included background and health information on asbestos, worker safety programs, and handling of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).
